Grandiflora Roses

Grandiflora Roses are not hardy and require substantial care and winter protection to survive in the North and much of the Midwest.  However it may not be as much work as you think, many gardeners have found great success growing them even in the cold climates.  Check the previous pages about growing, pruning and winter protecting these roses.  If you are temped to try, here a some of the best to consider.. and yes, they are tempting aren’t they?

Grandiflora ‘About Face’

‘About Face’ is a tall grandiflora rose bearing mostly solitary blooms of globular old fashioned form.  Flushes of blooms occur throughout the season.  Buds are full, pointed and ovoid.  The bicolor is reverse of standard, with the golden yellow color on the inside and the deeper bronze red on the back of the petals.  The color is wonderful in all stages of bloom varying as the blooms mature, with loads of flowers.  Very showy in full bloom with dark glowing buds to full open blooms all at once.  Removing spent blooms will encourages additional flowering.  The plant is strong and vigorous with excellent disease resistance, making it an easy to grow grandiflora.  A wonderful selection for rose beds, mixed borders and specimen plants and excellent as a cut flower.  Prune in spring removing old canes and dead, diseased or crossed canes.  Cut back canes by about one third.  More pruning will likely be required in cold regions.  Grow in zones 4 and 5 with winter protections.

Grandiflora ‘Cherry Parfait’

Very show bi-color blooms of creamy white with broad cherry red edging put on a continuous show of blooms.  As the bloom matures the color deepens rather than paling out in the sun.  The plant stays fresh thoughout the season and the bloom color holds up very well through the summer..  ‘Cherry Parfait’ is a Meilland rose and does very well in all regions, it is very cold hardy with proper winter protection.  A shrubby rounded habit is ideal in a mixed border.  You will typically find this rose grafted, not own root.  ‘Cherry Parfait’ was originally introduced as ‘Fire and Ice’.

Red black flower buds mature to every changing petal colors beginning with creamy yellow edged with a vibrant cherry pink.  The blooms blush to shades of burgundy and finally finish in deep red.  The classic formed blooms are mesmerizing on long stems for cutting.  Each bloom is constantly changing and no two are the same.  The blooms are very large, but reach their largest potential in cooler climates.  Protection from hot afternoon sun in hot regions will benefit the plant and the rose blooms.  An offspring of the ‘Fourth of July’, ‘Dick Clark’ is slightly bushier in form.  This vigorous rose is tough and disease resistant.  ‘Dick Clark” is spectacular as a standard and puts on a great show in beds or planted in masses.

‘Dream Come True’ produces striking blooms on long stems that are excellent for cutting, lasting a very long time in the vase.  The blooms are flawless exhibition quality  This grandiflora rose is exceptionally vigorous and will do well in cold regions, with protection of course.  An excellent choice for northern and midwest gardeners, the blooms are largest in cooler regions.  The delightful blooms are numerous and large with golden yellow centers blushing to ruby red petal tips.  Blooming is continuous.  Excellent for cutting, very long lasting in a vase.  ‘Dream Come True’ is often grafted to a hardy Multiflora rootstock.  This is an exceptional rose for any purpose in your landscape.

Stunning blooms of apricot blended with orange, yellow and coral mature to a salmon pink.  The flowers are held in small clusters of large blooms.  The blooms come in flushes from spring until fall.  ‘Sweet Fragrance’ is an elegant cut flower with sturdy stems.  With a slightly small stature, this is a great rose for beds and border, a gorgeous hedge or in containers.
