Serviceberry

Whether you consider Serviceberry a shrub or a shrubby tree, it lend all season interest and wonderful color to the fall landscape. Known by many names, Serviceberry, Shadbush, Juneberry, Sugarplum, etc.

Serviceberry Amelanchier alnifolia ‘Regent’

‘Regent’ is a nice compact Serviceberry. Masses of showy white bloom clusters in spring are somewhat fragrant. Beautiful rounded and toothed leaves turn yellow and burgundy for fall. The lovely branch form is attractive all winter. Generally reaches about 6 feet but may ultimately grow to 10 feet high and wide. ‘Regent’ is very easy to grow and maintain and is very attractive in all seasons.

The blooms attract pollinators of course, but even more so do the abundant berries. The dark purple fruits are formed in June are edible for both birds and humans. Perfect for jams and jellies, and taste similar to blueberries.. ‘Regent’ can be planted quite close together to form a windbreak or living fence.

‘Glenn Form’ Serviceberry grows beautifully as a shrub or pruned to a tree form with a wonderful upright, and somewhat narrow and symmetrical form. Showy white flowers appear in April and continue into May. However very few of the blooms develop into berries. Gorgeous scarlet leaves in fall.

Plant where the beautiful form can be appreciated, against darker backgrounds. Also a good choice for naturalizing in a woodland or along water. Prune root suckers to control spread as necessary.
